As a result of the Concerned People Coalition Builing Party, the Hudson Valley Activist Network has formed to be a coalition of grass roots activist groups based in the Hudson Valley. Click here to visit the HVAN site.

On Sunday, September 14th, Concerned People for Social Action threw a party to build relationships between our area's many diverse activist groups. The Coalition Building Party brought together a wide range of people in the progressive movement to meet, network, and enjoy each other's company at the Rokeby Mansion in Barrytown. There were marvelous guests, music, homemade food, and plenty of engaging discussions.

Circle of concerned people

In attendance were approximately 100 people, some representing various groups, some running for offices, and some just concerned about our country. Groups ranged from those involved with voting reform to people from Hudson River Clearwater, and individuals including veterans of WW2 through the Vietnam war.

Common concerns among the crowd were the current administration's dishonesty, media monopolies, environmental concerns, the current occupation of Iraq, corporate dominance and the widening gap between rich and poor.

A captivating speech by Congressman Maurice Hinchey The highlight for many was a captivating speech by Congressmen Maurice Hinchey, supporting grassroots efforts of this kind.

Also present and speaking at the party were the Red Hook candidates of Jean Bordewich Town Council, Chris Gilbert Town Council, Marirose Bump for Town Supervisor, Larry Kopczak for County Legislator in Red Hook and Tivoli, and Joel Tyner running for County Legislator in District 11.

Excited by the prospect of pooling resources and efforts, attendees had a follow-up meeting on October 12th, and formed the Hudson Valley Activist Network.
